Hundreds of Alaska-based UPS pilots will lose their jobs in layoffs that begin this weekend and continue through next year.
The package delivery giant plans to lay off a total of 300 pilots between now and 2011 and most of those pilots are based in Anchorage.
In the first wave of job cuts, starting Sunday, 30 UPS pilots based in Anchorage will be let go, according to pilot union officials.
A total of 262 pilots based in Alaska are expected to lose their jobs by the end of next year, according to the union officials. However, because the city is a major refueling stop for international flights, UPS said it will fill each of those vacancies with more senior pilots now based outside the state.
Eighty-four of the 262 Alaska-based pilots to be laid off live in Alaska, according to the Independent Pilots Association.
