For more than four years, Merced schools have been proving an old adage wrong.
In Merced and surrounding areas, there are such things as free lunches -- at least for children aged 1 through 18.
This week marked the kickoff of the Merced City School District (MCSD) and the Merced Union High School District's (MUHSD) free lunch program. The program runs until July 30.
Demand for the service is growing.
The Merced City School District (MCSD) saw a 5 percent rise in the number of students qualifying for free and reduced-price lunches, said Terri Soares, director of nutrition services for MCSD.
In light of this, MCSD added two more locations this summer for the summer feeding program, Soares added.
