For job seekers on the Grand Strand such as Rich Grogan, the unemployment rate rising this week piles bad news onto what is already a difficult situation and has those who have been able to land a job, such as Sandra Nolen, counting their blessings.
The jobless rate shot up in August for Horry and Georgetown counties, as well as South Carolina, the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce reported this week.
Horry County's rate was up to 10.5 percent in August from 10 percent in July, while Georgetown County's rate increased to 11.7 percent from 11.2 percent.
Statewide, the jobless rate grew to 11 percent in August, from 10.7 percent in July. South Carolina has the sixth-highest jobless rate in the country.
And the Grand Strand - with another busy summer in the books - is heading into a period when unemployment usually rises.
