Markita Love has a long-term outlook for a job that, in theory, could last just through the holidays.
Taking a quick break Friday from greeting customers at the Verizon Wireless store on Veterans Parkway in north Columbus, Love called her supposedly temporary job a “blessing” after enduring a year without work and a short stint at a collections agency, a position that did not fulfill her.
“With holiday or seasonal helpers, it’s kind of like an interview because you never know what the next step might be,” said the Columbus resident, 24, and single mother of 5-year-old son, Javion. “You may do a great job and then get hired on permanent. So I see this as a big interview for me to get permanent work.”
’Tis the season for Columbus-area residents like Love to seek out work they hope either leads to something bigger and better, or simply provides some extra income to handle their holiday bills.
With so-called Black Friday — the day after Thanksgiving and one of the biggest shopping days of the year — less than three weeks away, retailers are already stocking up on holiday help to keep what they hope will be legions of shoppers happy.
