Anchorage police say they caught two copper thieves this week, and they are using the arrests to publicize a growing, and expensive, problem of copper thefts from local businesses.
The latest incident happened early Tuesday. A Federal Aviation Administration worker arriving to work at a maintenance facility on West 50th Avenue saw two men loading rolls of copper cable into the back of a silver pickup truck, said Anchorage police spokeswoman Emily Tyrrell.
The worker called police, who responded at 6:23 a.m. Officers spotted the truck around Jewel Lake Road and tried to get the driver to pull over but he kept going, police said.
Near Sand Lake, the men abandoned the truck. One shed his jacket as he took off. The clothing helped when officers brought out their police dogs to track the suspects, Tyrrell said.
