This year, more big-box retailers will begin their Black Friday sales earlier than ever Friday morning, and more are encroaching on Thanksgiving Day.
Q: Why are so many retailers moving up the start times of their early-bird sales or even opening on Thanksgiving Day?
A: The move is to accommodate shoppers who would have otherwise avoided the day-after Thanksgiving crowd, according to National Retail Federation spokeswoman Kathy Grannis.
"Thanksgiving used to be off-limits back in the day," Grannis said. "In recent years, we have seen retailers consider opening on Thanksgiving as an option."
She said stores have Thanksgiving Day hours to help spread out the rush of shoppers they might get on Black Friday. "They are actually reaching more people than they may have previously."
