Thirty-seven percent of charitable organizations nationally reported decreased contributions this year compared with last year, but nearly the same — 36 percent — reported greater contributions.
“The worst may be over,” said GuideStar.org, which on Monday released results of an annual fundraising survey.
GuideStar and other philanthropic and fundraising organizations joined forced for the 2010 survey, which measured giving at 2,356 public charities and 163 private foundations.
Donations had dwindled for slightly more than half the charities surveyed in 2009, so “the results are encouraging” this year, GuideStar said.
The proportion of nonprofits reporting decreased contributions this year fell 14 percent from a year earlier, and the proportion reporting greater contributions rose 13 percent.
