The Bi-Lo grocery store chain is launching a month-long program to get donations of pet food, for distribution to pets of people in need.
The "Feed the Love" pet food drive will continue through March 22, with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and several other area organizations as recipients. A similar drive last year netted more than 63,000 pounds of pet food in the Southeast.
Bi-Lo says customers can buy "Feed the Love" pet food bags for $5. In return, the company will give customers an additional 10 cents per gallon in its Fuelperks rewards program that gives a discount at the gas pump.
Animal control officials say those in need often find it difficult to afford food for their dogs and cats.
