Fort Benning schools may add about 200 students over the next two years -- an increase of 7 percent -- based on available housing units and growth from the Base Realignment and Closure process.
Lois Rapp, superintendent of the six elementary schools and one middle school on post, said enrollment is now at 2,750 students but will increase as new or renovated housing units become available. When completed, post housing will total 4,000 units which will include 270 new housing quarters under construction over the next two years at Patton Village.
Some units may be filled as the Armor School completes its move of 7,500 military personnel from Fort Knox, Ky., to the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning. Including the soldiers, the BRAC expansion is projected to bring a total of 28,000 people -- including family members, civilian workers and contractors -- to the Chattahoochee Valley by Sept. 15.
