Wine drinkers are supposed to be too classy to gloat, but let's say it anyway: "USA! USA! USA!"
The United States booted France from its No. 1 spot in wine consumption last year, an industry leader said Tuesday.
His report dealt with total volume, not per-capita consumption, where the United States remains far down in the ranks.
It's evidence nonetheless that Americans are finding out the pleasures of the drink, much of it produced at Modesto-area wineries.
"It's like a whole experience," said Bryan Worrell of Modesto, sipping a 2009 tempranillo Tuesday evening at the Camp 4 wine cafe on Tenth Street. "You get all the senses."
U.S. consumers last year bought the equivalent of 329.7 million cases, each containing a dozen 750-milliliter bottles, consultant Jon Fredrikson said in the Gomberg-Fredrikson Report.
