MENDOTA -- When Maria Rodriguez's sister lost her house to foreclosure two years ago, the sisters agreed their families would double up in a rental. It hasn't been easy.
Six people are now crammed into a small, two-bedroom home in this rural west-side city. Rodriguez, her husband and their 5-year-old son sleep in one bedroom.
Her sister and brother-in-law sleep in the other. Her 18-year-old nephew stays in the living room.
"This is all we can really afford right now," Rodriguez said in Spanish. "It's really compact for me. But it's worse for my sister. She basically had to move a whole home into one room."
Over the past decade, many in California like Rodriguez have had their housing situation turned upside down by the economy -- by a lost home, a lost job, sometimes both.
Newly released 2010 Census figures show that tough times have left more Californians renting, more staying with extended family and more living under the same roof than 10 years ago.
