As statewide gas prices soared to nearly $4.25 a gallon in April, California motorists cut back on gasoline use, according to statistics released Friday by the State Board of Equalization.
Gasoline consumption in April was 1.2 billion gallons, down 4 percent from 1.25 billion gallons in April last year.
The statewide average price of gas in April was $4.21 a gallon, $1.07 above what it was in the year-earlier period.
