In South Carolina, gas 22 cents cheaper than 2011's

Tonya Root - Rock Hill Herald

May 07, 2012 03:22 PM

The price for a gallon of gasoline in South Carolina decreased by 6.6 cents last week to average $3.49 per gallon on Sunday, which is 22 cents lower than the same day a year ago, according to the website SouthCarolinaGasPrices.com.

At 7:15 a.m. Monday, gas was $3.41 at several spots in Rock Hill along I-77 at Cherry Road and Dave Lyle Boulevard.

The decrease of gas prices in the state reflects the national average that also fell 2.9 cents per gallon last week to average $3.77, according to the site. The national average has decreased 13.4 cents per gallon during the last month and is 15.9 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

“I’d probably sound like a broken record at this point if I were to tell folks that crude prices breached and fell under $100 late last week. I’m sure I’ll be flooded with motorists asking why gasoline prices haven't fallen yet,” said Patrick DeHaan, a senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com.

“Either way, it’s great news for motorists but some hot spots may burn motorists before they see any sizable relief," DeHaan said. "When I mention hot spots, I’m thinking of the West Coast where supply has dropped considerably, causing tightness and perhaps higher prices. The rest of the country, however, should see short term relief continue ahead of Memorial Day, easing unfounded fears of the national average hitting $5 per gallon, or even $4 per gallon."
