Roundup of violence in Iraq - 17 February 2007

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondent Laith Hammoudi in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. Itís posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchyís Washington Bureau.

1- Baghdad. the source :- the MIO operation room

∑ 2 Iraqi policemen were injured in an IED explosion targeted their vehicle near Al Ghadeer bridge in Baghdad Al Jadida neighborhood east Baghdad at 7,30 am BLT.

∑ 5 anonymous bodies were found in different parts of Baghdad. the 5 bodies were found in Karkh, the western part of Baghdad. one body was found in each of Shula neighborhood, Yarmook neighborhood, Abo Dsheer neighborhood, Khadraa neighborhood and one body was found in Mamoun neighborhood.

2- Karkuk province

∑ 10 civilians were killed and and 65 were injured in two car bombs explosions near a garage in Rahimawa neighborhood in Karkuk province north Iraq early morning today. The police chief of districts and towns in Karkuk brigadier General Sarhad Qadir said that the explosions were donít by remote control in one of the local crowded markets which caused the death of 10 people and the injury of other 65 including women and children. Qadir added that 10 cars were burnt because of the explosion and the dead people number may increase because of the serious injuries of some people. Its to be mentioned that Rahimawa is Kurdish majority area and its one of the poor neighborhoods of Karkuk.

3- Dyala province

∑ A source in Baquba police directorate said that 10 insurgents were killed in clashes with the a combined force of the police commandos and the MNF who were rebuilding a police check point in Al Toroq Wal Josoor intersection west Baquba. The source said that 2 police commandos were wounded in the clashes which lasted more than an hour. The same source confirmed that two police men were injured in fire shooting by insurgents near Al Hwedir village. 4 civilians were injured in mortar attack in the same village.

∑ A source in the combined operation room said that 2 members from one family and 9 others from the same family were injured in mortar rounds attacks targeted a house in Al mafraq neighborhood west Baquba.

4- Karbalaa

∑ The spokesman of Krbalaa police directorate said that a car bomb explosion took place today afternoon in Husaniya area (20 KMs north east Karbalaa province. The explosion took place 300 meters away from a check point and no casualties were recorded. The spokesman of Karbalaa health directorate said that 2 men inside the car were killed in the explosion.
