Roundup of violence in Iraq - 3 February 2007 By McClatchy Newspapers
The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers correspondents in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. Itís posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchyís Washington Bureau.
- Around 9 a.m. a parked car bomb detonated near a market in Mahmoudia (south Baghdad). One citizen killed and 9 injured.
- Around 1:30 p.m. an IED exploded in Palestine street (east Baghdad) near Al kindi hospital targeting a bus. The explosion claimed the life of one citizen and injured four.
- Around 4:20 p.m. a truck bomb exploded in a crowded market of Al Sadriyah area. The massive blast claimed the lives of 130 and injured 305 (according to the last updated toll by the ministry of interior). General Jihad Al Jabiri head of explosive dept of the MOI told Al Iraqiya TV that the truck contains 1000 kg of explosives (2200 pounds). The explosion heavily damaged at least 10 buildings.
- Around 5:30 p.m. a mortar attack on the Diyala bridge surrounding area. The shelling claimed one citizenís life. - Police found 19 dead bodies all over the capital. The corpses were found in the following neighborhoods: 2 in Yarmouk, 4 in Amel, 1 in Dora, 1 in Shalchia, 2 in Washash, 1 in Eskan, 1 in Ghazalia, 1 in Rhmania, 1 in Baia, 1 in Karada, 2 in Sadr, 1 in Rashad and 1 in Aadhamiya.
Tikrit
- Around 7 a.m. a mortar attack targeting a police checkpoint on the road leading out from Samara city caused the death of 6 police men and injuring 2.
- Around 7:30 a.m. gunmen using machine guns attacked an Iraqi army checkpoint southwest the city of Samara. The attackers killed 4 soldiers and wounded 3. after that police imposed curfew in the city of Samara. These 2 incidents come after increase in the number of soldiers at checkpoints after announcing a new security plan in the province that target to provide better security depending on Iraqi soldiers.
Basra
- Mortar shelling targeted the British camp at the former presidential palace in the southern city of Basra.
Around 9:30 a.m. a suicide car bomb targeting one of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP) buildings. The blast claimed the lives of 2 citizens and injured 18.
Around 9:45, another explosion in front of Dijla high school.
Around 10:10 a.m. a parking car bomb exploded in Al khadraa neighborhood.
After 30 minutes, another two explosions on the main road leading to Baghdad that injured 7 citizens.
Around the same time another car bomb exploded in Al Wasit neighborhood and another 2 IEDs exploded in Al Erfa neighborhood.
The speaker of the province council Razgar Ali said that outsiders are trying to start a new wave of violence in the city to stop implementing article 140 of the Iraqi constitution. Article 140 details the mechanism in which the city future will be decided by a referendum after resettling the displaced Kurds families under the former regime reign.
