Roundup of violence in Iraq - 19 January 2007

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondent Mohammed al Awsy in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. Itís posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchyís Washington Bureau.

Baghdad.

-- at 9:30 this morning an IED exploded at AL ELLWIAH intersection in KARADA, one traffic police officer was killed, another injured .

-- At 3 o'clock this afternoon one mortar round fell in al rahamniyah area near haifa street, 2 civilians were killed and 3 others were injured .

-- At 4 o'clock this evening one mortar fell in bayaa area western Baghdad, one civilian was injured.

-- At 5 o'clock this evening one mortar round fell in sharaa, one women was killed and 3 civilians were injured.

-- At 6 o'clock this evening unknown gunmen opened fire in AL SHURTA AL KHAMSA area south west Baghdad, one civilian was killed and 2 others were injured.

-- today 17 bodies were found in Baghdad, 1 yarmouk, 2 amil, 1 aour, 2 zaafaraniyah, 1 selakh, 1 kamaliyah, 4 rahmaniyah, 1 bayaa, 1 shurta khamsa and 3 in dora. some were tortured and handcuffed .

Tikrit

-- according to a police sources from BAJI police an Iraqi pharmacist called SAFAA FARHAN was assassinated by unknown gunmen at AL ATIBAA street in BAJI .

-- a family of 4 was on its way from Baghdad to tikrit after getting a threat. on their way was a checkpoint which stopped them and asked for their identifications. after finding out that one of the brothers was called OMAR he was accused of having a forged ID but they let them go. after leaving the checkpoint they were stopped by a civilian car with unknown gunmen. they asked who is omar and killed him immediately and stabbed his other brother. after that the mother and sister took the body and the injured one and drove them to tikritt hospital .

BASRA.

-- according to the MNF spokesman in the south, 6 British soldiers were injured last night by a rocket attack on the British consulate in the center of basra .
