Roundup of violence in Iraq - 29 January 2007

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondent Mohammed al Awsy in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. Itís posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchyís Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

-- at 9 o'clock this morning a car bomb was left by the roadside near AL HAMZA square in AL HABIBIYAH area eastern Baghdad, 1 civilian was killed and 5 others were injured.

-- ?at 9:30 this morning an IED exploded inside a minibus in AL MUSTANSIRIYAH square near mustansiriyah university, 4 civilians were killed and 6 others were injured.

-- at 8:30 this morning an IED exploded near abin Taimiyah sunni mosque near the airport highway at an Iraqi police patrol, 2 police were injured.

-- this noon a sniper in karada area shot a policeman who was guarding HAY AL WIHDA bank .

-- at 4 o'clock this evening a car bomb exploded behind AL MUSTANSIYRIAH university, 3 civilians were injured.

-- at 5 o'clock this evening a suicide bomber detonated his car at an Iraqi army checkpoint in AL HURRIYAH area near ADAN square, 5 civilians were killed and 25 others were injured.

-- at 6:30 this evening mortars fell at AL ZAFARANIYAH area southern Baghdad near a local market, 12 civilians were killed and 28 others were injured.

-- today 21 dead bodies were found in Baghdad, some were handcuffed and tortured, 1 in abu ghraib, 3 bayaa, 3 aour, 1 zayuna, 1 rashad, 1 adhamiyah, 1 alwiah, 3 amil, 2 near Haifa street, 2 ghazaliyah, 2 yarmouk and 1 dora.

TIKRIT

-- according to an Iraqi police source from AL TUZZ area 175km north of Baghdad, this morning 5 unknown gunmen were killed by fires from the American helicopters last night near SLEMAN BEAK area 7km south of TUZZ area. the police source said the gunmen were trying to plant an IED.

-- According to the spokesman of the 4th division of the Iraqi army in tikrit, the general commander of the American forces General George Casey arrived last night at the base of the 4th division of the Iraqi army in tikrit, a meeting was held with the staff general ABDUL AZZIZ AL MUFTI [general commander of the 4th division] they discussed the security situation and the way to make Baghdad plan succeed and the issue of the participation of one of the iraqi army brigade in SULAIMANIYAH at Baghdad security plan, the visit lasted only half an hour.

DIYALA province. -- According to the police chief of diyala province general GHANEM AL QURAISHI, 1,500 police staff and officers have been dismissed, and 950 volunteers were accepted.

-- According to a security and medical source from baqouba city today, a group of terrorists attacked a residential complex for AL BAYAT tribes in KARA TABA village which led to the killing of 8 civilians .

-- Joint forces [American and Iraqi] have arrested the terrorist NASEER AOUDA, in a raid in AL TAHREER area in baqouba, he is a slaughterer and responsible of slaughtering 33 victims in the past year.

-- A source from diyala police said the joint forces killed 10 terrorists yesterday night in baquba city and near diyala sports club.

KIRKUK province.

-- According to the head of the operation room in kirkuk province colonel YAZGAR SHUKUR, last evening at about 5o'clock a car bomb exploded near the central market , it was left by the roadside, 6 civilians were killed and 16 others were injured and 25 civilian cars were destroyed.

-- at 7:30 last evening another car bomb exploded in AL SHURJA market near OMAR BIN AL KHATAB mosque, 5 civilians were killed and 20 others were injured and 12 civilian cars were destroyed.
