Roundup of violence in Iraq Monday 28 May 2007

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. All times are Iraq local times.

---

BAGHDAD

-Around midday, police were ambushed after receiving a phone call that two minibuses were taken by gunmen from Bab Al-Muadham to the Fadhil area (east Baghdad). Three policemen were killed and seven injured.

-At 2 p.m., a car bomb exploded near Ghailani mosque, one of the most holy shrines and mosques for Sunni in Baghdad, killing at least 22 people and injuring 30 others.

-Around 3 p.m., a roadside bomb exploded near Adila Khatoon mosque, killing two people and injuring five.

DIYALA

-Early in the morning, gunmen killed a police officer when they opened fire on a police patrol at the Ameen neighborhood north of Baquba.

-Before midday, a squad of the fifth division of the Iraqi army raided Shaqraq village north of Muqdadiya (northeast of Baghdad), killing four terrorists and finding a large cache of weapons and ammunitions.

-After midday, a police patrol found the dead bodies of two people who had been tortured and shot in the head and chest in the Doura neighborhood north of Baquba.

-Around 1 p.m., gunmen killed one civilian and injured three when they opened fire on them at Saisabana village east of Baghdad.

-Around midday, an armed group opened fire randomly at Barawana village in Muqdadiya (northeast of Baghdad), killing one civilian and injuring three.

SALAHUDDIN

-Sunday night, gunmen kidnapped 40 people on the highway of Baghdad-Tikrit south of Samara (north of Baghdad), all of them from the Jibour and Shimar tribes, in retaliation for the tribes banding together to oppose terrorists.

KIRKUK

-Around 9 p.m. Sunday, a roadside bomb exploded when a police patrol passed through Awashra village on the main road of Hawija-Fatha (west of Kirkuk), injuring three policemen and damaging their vehicle.

-At 5 a.m. Monday, joint forces made a raid on Sufra village, taking four people into custody.
