Round-up of daily violence, Sunday 17 June 2007

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondents in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. It’s posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchy’s Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

-- Three Iraqi soldiers were injured when an IED explosion targeted their patrol in Al Eskan intersection in Al Mansour neighborhood downtown Baghdad around 2 p.m.

-- Seven civilians were injured when mortar shells hit Salman Bak district in southeast Baghdad around 5 p.m.

-- Five bodies were found in Baghdad. Four bodies were found in Karkh, the western part of Baghdad in the following neighborhoods (2 bodies in Amil, 1 body in Bayaa and 1 body in Jihad). One body was found in Sadr city in the eastern part of Baghdad (Rusafa side).

Kirkuk

-- Two civilians were killed when gunmen opened fire targeting their truck on Al Abbasi- Biji street southwest Kirkuk city Saturday night.

-- Two Kurdish security members were killed and 3 civilians were wounded in a car bomb explosion in Al Askari neighborhood near Laylan bridge downtown Kirkuk city around 8:40 a.m. Eyewitnesses said that they saw a tanned skin man got down from the car and run away when the security forces tried to capture him. -- Two policemen were killed and 7 of their colleagues wounded when an IED explosion targeted their patrol near the entrance of Siniyah district north of Tikrit city early morning.

Diyala

-- Gunmen opened fire killing a civilian in Khalis town north of Baquba city midday.

-- A civilian was killed and 2 others wounded in an IED explosion in Sadiyat Al Shat district, a part of Khalis town north of Baquba around midday.

-- Five civilians from one family were wounded when an IED explosion targeted their houses in Baladrooz town east of Baquba around 1 p.m.

-- A policeman and a civilian were wounded when gunmen opened fire in Muqdadiyah town in northeast Baquba around 1 p.m.

-- Medical and security sources said that 17 residents from Jizani Al Emam village had been killed and injured in the ongoing clashes that started Saturday between the residents of Jizani Al Emam village, one of the villages of Khalis town and what is called the Islamic State of Iraq.

Anbar

-- Police sources in Falluja city said that a pregnant woman and her husband died and her mother and brother wounded when an IED exploded targeting their minibus while they were heading to Falluja hospital. The incident happen near Al Masjid Al Kabeer (the big mosque) of Falluja city west of Baghdad around 6 a.m.

-- At least 4 civilians were killed and 10 were wounded in a suicide bombing. The incident happened afternoon in Jbil district south Falluja when a suicide wearing a vest bomb detonated among the civilians who had gathered to renew their Falluja residency badges.
