Round-up of Daily violence in Iraq - Saturday 8 March 2008

The daily Iraqi violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondents in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. It’s posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchy’s Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

Around 5:00 p.m. an IED exploded in Muthaffar square in Sadr city in east Baghdad. No casualties were reported.

US army detonated under control two IED. The first IED was in Adhemiyah neighborhood while the second IED was in Kadhemiyah neighborhood, both in north of Baghdad.

Clashes took place between two groups of insurgents in Hurriyah neighborhood in west Baghdad around 4:30 p.m. No casualties were reported.

Police found four unidentified bodies in Baghdad. Three bodies were found in Rusafa, the eastern side of Baghdad in the following neighborhoods (1 body in Shaab, 1 body in Sadr city and 1 bodyin Obeidi). The fourth body was found in Doura neighbrohood in the western side of Baghdad.

Baquba

Around 7:00 a.m. an IED exploded in Snija village northeast of Baquba city. The explosion targeted a civilian car. A 40 year old mother was killed with her 22 year old daughter and 10 year old son. The father was injured, police said.

Gunmen killed a civilian near al Ameer School in downtown Baquba north of Baghdad around 7:30 a.m.

Two civilians were killed and six others were injured in an IED explosion that targeted a minibus in al Khammar village east of Baquba city on Saturday morning.

The chief police of Salam county Lieutenant colonel Sabah al Anbagi said that a joint force of Iraqi police and US army found dozens of corpses in one of the orchards in Albo- Toma village, part of Salam county in al Khalis town, 9 miles north of Baquba city. Al Anbagi said that the smell of the corpses led the joint force to the grave yard. According to al Anbagi, the force found three bodies were for people who were killed only about one month ago while dozens of corpses are for people who were killed more than one year ago. No identification documents were found, police said.

Arbil

The police director of Arbil province said that a French journalist was wounded when intruders tried to rape her in her room in Hawran hotel. The journalist was stabbed while she was defending herself according to police. The police director said “we arrested all the employees of the hotel to investigate with them because they are the main accused in the case because no one can enter the hotel in such late time without their knowledge”.

Kirkuk

A member of Sahwa council was killed and four others members were injured when an IED exploded in the industrial area in downtown Hawija town, 23 miles west of Kirkuk city on Saturday morning.
