Round-up of Daily Violence in Iraq - Sunday 5 April 2009

The daily Iraq violence report is compiled by McClatchy Newspapers Special Correspondents in Baghdad from police, military and medical reports. This is not a comprehensive list of all violence in Iraq, much of which goes unreported. It's posted without editing as transmitted to McClatchy's Washington Bureau.

Baghdad

Gunmen assassinated a well known surgeon, Yasir Khdhaiyir, near al Nidaa Mosque in New Qahira, northern Baghdad at 10 p.m. Saturday as he was returning home from the hospital.

Gunmen assassinated Brigadier General Ahmed Kathum Breesem from the Minister of Interior's office, in the industrial street, Karrada, central Baghdad at 7.15 p.m. Sunday. He was driving, with his wife and children in the car when another car pulled alongside them and the gunman shot Breesem. He was taken to hospital where he died. His family was uninjured.

A roadside bomb targeted a U.S. military convoy in Shaab intersection, northern Baghdad, at 8 p.m. No casualties were reported.

Salahuddin

A thermal charge or an armour-penetrating-grenade, was thrown at a police patrol in Jubairiyah area in the city of Samarra at noon, Sunday killing one policeman, injuring four.

Diyala

One Sahwa member was killed by gunmen in Kinaan district, 15 km east Baquba at 3 p.m. Sunday

Anbar

A roadside bomb targeted an Iraqi Police patrol in Nowab al Thubbat neighbourhood, northern Fallijah at 8.15 a.m. killing one police officer and injuring one policeman.

A roadside bomb targeted a police patrol in Kamaliyat neighbourhood, central Fallujah at 8.25 a.m. injuring one policeman.

Kirkuk

A roadside bomb targeted a police patrol in Dumeiz neighbourhood in the south of Kirkuk City Sunday evening injuring seven people including policemen and civilians.

Gunmen shot one member of the Peshmerga, the Kurdish forces in Lilan district, northeastern Kirkuk City and killed him straight away.

Nineveh

A police patrol found the decapitated body of a man from al Islah al Ziraai, western Mosul late Saturday. The body was covered with evidence of torture, the police said.

A roadside bomb exploded in al Iqtisadeen neighbourhood in western Mosul, killing a small boy and injuring his mother.

Gunmen opened fire upon a civilian and killed him straight away in Tel al Rumman neighbourhood, western Mosul.

Gunmen threw a hand grenade at an Iraqi Army patrol in al Jazair neighbourhood ijuring one soldier.

Gunmen threw a hand grenade at an Iraqi Army patrol in al Maliyah neighbourhood injuring one soldier.
