TEGUCIGALPA — Ousted Honduran leaders were in Nicaragua on Monday morning to represent their country in an emergency meeting of leftist Latin American presidents to demand the return of the democratically elected government.
The presence of ousted President Manuel Zelaya and Foreign Minister Patricia Rodas at the joint meeting of Central American nations with the presidents of ALBA nations raised the possibility that Honduras would have parallel governments — one in Nicaragua and the other going about the order of business in Honduras.
Zelaya was toppled by force at dawn Sunday, hours before he planned to defy a Supreme Court order suspending a nonbinding referendum that could have paved the way for him to run for reelection.
He told news stations that he was snatched from his bedroom by hooded soldiers and placed in the presidential plane for Costa Rica.
