Former Brexit leader Nigel Farage, who is set to speak at a North Carolina conservative conference, is reportedly a “person of interest” in the FBI’s Russia investigation.
Farage, 53, is set to be the keynote speaker at the Civitas Institute’s Conservative Leadership Conference this weekend. The former UK Independence Party leader and “Chief Brexiteer” will “share his story” according to an email promoting the conference from Civitas Institute President Francis De Luca. The email mentions that Farage was “recently name (sic) ‘person of interest’ in the FBI Trump-Russia probe.”
Civitas is a conservative public policy organization headquartered in Raleigh. The conference is June 16-17 in Raleigh.
Farage ridiculed a report by The Guardian, saying that he was “extremely doubtful” because he has never been to Russia and has no business ties there.
The Guardian newspaper reported that sources with knowledge of the investigation said the FBI would like to interview Farage because of his ties to both Trump and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, though the newspaper also noted that Farage was not accused of any crime. Last year, Wikileaks released a series of emails stolen from the Democratic National Committee.
Farage denied the report.
“In response to the Guardian article, it has taken me a long time to finish reading because I am laughing so much at this fake news,” Farage tweeted on June 1.
