In his first major healthcare speech since becoming the Republican presidential nominee, Sen. John McCain said Tuesday he would support reform experiments in the states, work hard to lower healthcare costs and offer families up to $5,000 in tax credits to purchase insurance.
''I won't create another entitlement program that Washington will let get out of control,'' McCain said, speaking at a cancer research center at the University of South Florida.
But he noted that several states, including North Carolina, were working on interesting innovations and he would support ``a Guaranteed Access Plan -- that would reflect the best experience of the states.''
