ST. PAUL, Minn. — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Wednesday that she would accept her party's vice presidential nomination, highlighting her family — and her journey from "hockey mom" to historic national candidate.
"I'm not a member of the permanent political establishment," she told Republican delegates, and millions watching on television. "I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this great country."
The speech of the first woman ever on a GOP national ticket — highly anticipated since Sen. John McCain picked her last Friday — was greeted with stomping, sign-waving, cheering and applause in the packed Xcel Energy Center.
Palin, 44 years old and a first-term governor, talked about her family as they looked on from a special box just off the floor of the convention.
"No family ever seems typical, and that's how it is with us," she said. "Our family has the same ups and downs as any other. The same challenges, and the same joys."
