The U.S. Senate race between Sen. Ted Stevens and Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich ignited this week with attack ads, challenges and accusations.
A Democratic group hoping to see Begich unseat Stevens began airing television ads accusing Stevens of sending federal money to groups that hired his son as a consultant. The Stevens camp called the commercials baseless.
Meanwhile, the state Republican party called on Begich to give back $10,000 in campaign contributions he received from a New York politician who is in hot water for failing to report income on rental properties.
Hours later, on Tuesday, the Begich camp responded saying they were giving the money to charity but accusing the Republicans of being hypocrites because Stevens isn't just under suspicion but about to go to trial.
