FORT WORTH — From presidents to homemakers, Texans are giving millions of dollars more to Republican presidential nominee John McCain than to his Democratic counterpart Barack Obama.
Tarrant County residents are following that statewide trend, but they have now given Obama enough to top contributions given locally to his primary challenger, Hillary Clinton, according to campaign reports marking donations through July.
"We have been waiting to see whether Texans would load in behind McCain and they finally are," said Cal Jillson, a political science professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. "It was to be expected, but it’s been a long time coming.
"McCain was not the first choice of the deep-pocket Texans who support the Republican Party. But they are coming home to roost."
This does not include donations made since McCain named Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate in late August. Those donations will be included on the next report, due out Oct. 20.
