Presidential election draws new voters in Washington State

Joe Chapman and Franny White - Tri-City Herald

October 09, 2008 07:27 AM

Franklin and Benton counties could have more registered voters than ever before come Nov 4.

The Mid-Columbia is following a statewide trend of breaking records for the number of people registering to vote this fall.

State election officials said Tuesday that 3.5 million voters now are registered.

That's about 1,300 more than the record set in 2004, which later was scaled back after the state removed invalid registrations from its database.

"This is a pretty exciting and dynamic election year," Secretary of State Sam Reed told The Associated Press.

He said there are more than 280,000 new voters this year, and thousands of new registration applications still are being processed.

That doesn't include a last-minute surge leading up to last Saturday's preliminary registration deadline.
