FRANKFORT – U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning apologized Monday for saying U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg could die within the year from pancreatic cancer.
“I apologize if my comments offended Justice Ginsberg,” Bunning said in a statement released from his Washington office.
“That certainly was not my intent. It is great to see her back at the Supreme Court today and I hope she recovers quickly. My thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.”
The Courier-Journal reported that Bunning said during a speech Saturday at the Hardin County Republican Party’s Lincoln Day Dinner that he supports conservative judges “and that’s going to be in place very shortly because Ruth Bader Ginsburg has cancer.”
He said pancreatic cancer is the “kind that you don’t get better from” and said nine months is about the longest anyone with the cancer would live even with surgery.
State Senate President David Williams, R-Burkesville, was asked Monday what he thought about Bunning’s comment.
Williams, who reportedly is considering running next year for Bunning’s seat, first said he was not at the Elizabethtown speech.
