RNC Chairman Michael Steele may gotten off to a rocky start as the head of the Republican Party, but Gov. Sarah Palin has come out in his support.
Steele told FOX News he'll resign if he's stripped of his authority to manage the Republican Party's money.
There's a lot of chatter on cable television and among the pundits that Steele hasn't quite found his stride as party chairman – even as the GOP tries to figure out its future. (This recent Gallup poll found that "since the first year of George W. Bush's presidency in 2001, the Republican Party has maintained its support only among frequent churchgoers, with conservatives and senior citizens showing minimal decline.")
Palin, who shared a stage last month with Steele at a Right to Life banquet in Indiana, announced her support of the new chairman.
Her political action committee issued a statement late Tuesday saying that Steele is a good counterpoint to President Barack Obama, and deserves the support of Republicans: "We have another voice in Washington, D.C. – a man who understands what Alaskans believe: less centralized government control, restrained budgets, more opportunity for development and fewer taxes. Today, we have a friend in RNC Chairman Michael Steele and his bold and courageous speech defines his leadership goals that will guide us all through this most difficult time for our nation."
