Sanford headed out of town again — only this time with his wife

The State

July 15, 2009 05:28 PM

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Mark Sanford and wife, Jenny, are traveling out of state for the rest of the week, according to the governor's office.

In a release sent out Wednesday morning, spokesman Joel Sawyer said the governor has canceled pending work for the rest of the week and is out of town with his wife. Sawyer would not say where the Sanfords had gone, only that they were "out of state but in country."

Sawyer said the State Law Enforcement Division had been notified. Sawyer deferred question about security to SLED. A SLED spokesperson said the agency knows where the governor and his wife are but would not discuss where or if security is with them.

"The governor remains committed to working on his marriage," Sawyer said of the trip, adding the fact he is working on his relationship should not be a surprise to anyone.

Sanford's schedule has come under scrutiny after he left his security detail and took an undisclosed six-day trip to Argentina to visit his lover there, later admitting the extra-marital affair. Since then, Sanford has started issuing a weekly schedule that includes public events and plans for private staff discussions.
