Measure to censure S.C. Gov. Sanford is likely today

The State (Columbia, S.C.)

December 16, 2009 07:30 AM

House lawmakers today will likely approve a measure that will censure Gov. Mark Sanford for his five-day June disappearance and for allegedly using state resources to facilitate an extramarital affair.

Lawmakers had been weighing whether to remove Sanford from office for secretly leaving the state in June to visit his lover in Argentina and for a 2008 taxpayer funded trip during which Sanford admitted to a romantic encounter with his lover.

A panel charged with putting together an impeachment resolution said it thinks Sanford steered the 2008 trade mission to Argentina to visit his lover. But Sanford's actions did not warrant removing him from office, the panel determined.

Last week, the panel rejected an impeachment resolution by a 6-1 vote and unanimously agreed to censure Sanford, who has roughly 13 months left in his final term.
