Under fire for launching a television ad attacking Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown, the California Chamber of Commerce said Thursday that it will take the spot off the airwaves.
The surprise move followed complaints from some of the chamber's member companies and directors, including UC President Mark Yudof, said chamber President and CEO Allan Zaremberg.
The spot slammed Brown for his record as California governor and mayor of Oakland. Brown and his wife, Anne Gust, former general counsel for clothing retailer Gap, complained to some member companies, Zaremberg said.
Yudof, who wrote in a Facebook posting that "I did not and do not approve of" the ad, talked personally to the chamber head Wednesday.
Four chamber directors sent the group, which claims about 100 board members, a letter demanding that it stop running the ad.
"We've had members that liked the ad, and we have some members that rather we not continue with that," Zaremberg said.
He said the chamber would be rotating to another commercial that doesn't advocate any position. The Brown ad was still running on Sacramento-area cable TV stations late Thursday afternoon.
