WASHINGTON — Carly Fiorina has a slight lead over Tom Campbell in the three-way money race to challenge Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., according to figures released Tuesday.
Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard, announced that she raised $1.7 million in the first three months of the year, compared to $1.6 million for Campbell, a former congressman. The third candidate, Assemblyman Chuck Devore, has not yet released his fundraising totals.
Fiorina, who entered the race in 2009, raised $3.6 million last year, including a $2.5 million loan that she made to her campaign. Fiorina's grand total is now $5.3 million. Campbell did not enter the race until January.
Fiorina ended the quarter with $2.8 million in cash on hand, while Campbell did not say how much money he has banked.
Overall, Fiorina said, she has received financial support from 5,861 people. Two-thirds of her donors are from California, she said, and her contributors made average donations of $266.
The fundraising reports must be filed with the Federal Election Commission by Thursday, but the Fiorina and Campbell campaigns released them early.
