H. Ross Perot looked across a room filled with military uniforms on Wednesday and lamented that business schools don't bother to teach true leadership to students anymore.
"I can't say enough about the experience you get in the military," he said, praising the hundreds of students at Fort Leavenworth's Command and General Staff College.
Perot was at Fort Leavenworth to help open a research center, the Simons Center for the Study of Interagency Cooperation. He recently donated $6.1 million to the college's foundation, which operates the Simons Center.
The agency will conduct research and analysis focused on tactical and operational levels of war. The center also will work to further develop relationships between the military and other government agencies ranging from the state department and CIA to the Department of Agriculture and more. Military leaders have said that it's vital for the military to work with other government agencies especially during conflicts.
Students and college faculty asked Perot for his opinion on several issues including his thoughts on the long-term viability of a third-party politics.
"I have a little experience with that," the former presidential candidate said.
He said third-party groups like the tea party will have a difficult road ahead as long as Republicans and Democrats continue to control elections.
"The two parties have absolutely locked up control of what happens in elections," he said.
But the 79-year-old emphasized that many of the nation's problems would be minimized if Americans had access to good public schools, strong family units and made decisions based on a "strong moral ethical base."
