Republican gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley brought a bunch of her big-name friends when she returned to her "second home" of Hilton Head Island for a fundraising luncheon Friday.
Former presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann; former S.C. first lady Jenny Sanford; and state attorney general Henry McMaster all spoke in support of Haley, a state lawmaker from Lexington whose in-laws are island residents.
During a sweltering afternoon at Hilton Head Plantation, more than 150 people packed into a dining room and deck overlooking Skull Creek for the $125-per-person event.
Sanford and Romney were among the earliest backers of Haley, who was once relatively unknown but has since rocketed past her GOP rivals and won almost half the vote and 42 of the state's 46 counties in last week's primary
