After Utah win, Tea Party puts Alaska's Murkowski on notice

Erika Bolstad - McClatchy Newspapers

June 23, 2010 04:29 PM

Fresh off their Tuesday night victory in Utah's GOP Senate primary, the Tea Party Express made clear its next target for ouster: Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska.

The group, a California-based political action committee that's come to define the burgeoning political movement, announced last week it would back Joe Miller, the Fairbanks attorney who's running against Murkowski in the primary. Now, the Tea Party Express is comparing Murkowski to a "lame race horse."

"Lisa Murkowski embodies all that is wrong with Washington D.C. politicians and its time to retire her, like a lame race horse who has long since served its purpose," said Dustin Stockton, Director of Grassroots & Coalitions for the Tea Party Express.

The Tea Party Express pledges to have staff on the ground in Alaska, and to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to support Miller's candidacy. He also has the backing of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who called Miller a "true Commonsense Constitutional Conservative." Palin wrote on her Facebook page that Murkowski is "part of the big government problem in Washington," and that she and "much of the political establishment" has strayed from the principles upon which they had espoused."
