Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., sharply criticized recent comments by Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele on Tuesday.
Steele's comment that Afghanistan is "a war of Obama's choosing" has provoked sharp dissent within his own party.
Isakson, in remarks at a news conference outside of Robins Air Force Base, said Steele's criticism of the war "was totally unacceptable."
"This is America's war, it started under the Bush Administration, it's been continued under the Obama Administration," Isakson said.
"I think activists need to always hold to the truth, and they need to say what is correct whether raising money at a rally or making a speech on television," Isakson added.
Isakson, who is up for re-election in November, did not call for Steele to resign as RNC chairman.
Isakson toured Robins early Tuesday as a part of a swing through military installations around the state.
