The State Board of Elections fined the campaign of Gov. Bev Perdue $30,000 today for its failure to report 42 campaign flights on private aircraft as donations.
The board, which has three Democrats and two Republicans appointed by the governor, voted down party lines to kill a push by the GOP to hold public hearings where Perdue staffers would be questioned under oath. The board's three Democrats also voted down a motion to impose a larger fine.
Earlier a lawyer for Perdue repeated the assertion that there was no intention by her 2008 campaign to withhold information about flights she took on private aircraft that were not disclosed before the election.
