Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Alvin Greene traveled by limo from his S.C. home to a Charlotte radio studio Monday, where he danced to a rap song about himself and waltzed around questions about his military record, obscenity charges and issues that seemed to baffle him.
Greene was ferried to and from Manning, S.C., as a guest of WBT-AM (1110) and morning host Keith Larson. It was the latest chapter in the bizarre odyssey of the unemployed veteran who shocked the nation by winning the Senate primary in June.
Republican Sen. Jim DeMint is considered a virtual lock in the race. Recent polls show him ahead by a 3-to-1 margin. DeMint had almost $4 million in campaign funds on hand July 1. Greene has yet to file a campaign report.
That didn't stop Greene from attracting attention.
A reporter traveling in his limo posted updates and photos along the way. Another reporter and webcam greeted his arrival. Five TV cameras pressed against the glass of Larson's studio. And a Los Angeles film crew recorded it all for a documentary.
Greene, who turns 33 today, appeared to enjoy the two-hour interview despite some tough questions.
Larson pressed him about his indictment this month by a grand jury on charges that he showed pornographic photos to a University of South Carolina student last year.
"There's a process for it," Greene said. "It's overdue. It should have been dealt with."
Asked if the charges were true, Greene said, "That's all I have to say about it." He went on to suggest prosecutors are "trying to smear my campaign."
Deputy Richland County Solicitor David Ross said he couldn't comment.
