Breitbart touts his 'war with mainstream media' during Texas tea party speech

Aman Batheja - The Fort Worth Star-Telegram

September 03, 2010 07:27 AM

MESQUITE — Conservative blogger and activist Andrew Breitbart told a North Texas Tea Party crowd Thursday night that the biggest enemies of conservatives are not President Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"It's George Stephanopoulos. It's Diane Sawyer. It's Charlie Gibson, and, my God, it's Katie Couric," Breitbart said. "They are the problem."

More than 500 people attended the event sponsored by the Dallas Tea Party and described by organizers as a fundraiser, symposium and election-season kickoff. Attendees paid between $5 and $20.

Breitbart devoted much of his keynote speech to, in his view, a major power source of the left — the mainstream media.

"We are at war with the mainstream media of America, and they're losing," Breitbart said to cheers. "They are in their last death spiral."

The California native runs a series of conservative websites and gained nationwide attention last year by posting videos that led to the demise of ACORN. In July, he posted a video of an official at the U.S. Agriculture Department that, taken out of context, appeared to show her making racist statements. He later said he was not aware of the context of her comment.

On Thursday, Breitbart criticized a wide range of national media outlets, including The New York Times and Politico.com, for glorifying the left while disparaging the right.

"They always change their goal posts for the other side," Breitbart said as attendees nodded.
