President Obama signed into law Monday a bill naming a mountain and an ice field in Alaska after longtime Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens.
The bill, sponsored by U.S. Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich and Rep. Don Young, names a mountain peak in Denali National Park and Preserve for Stevens.
It also puts his name on part of an ice field in the Chugach Mountains. The 13,895-foot peak, to be named Stevens Peak, is commonly known as South Hunter Peak and was the tallest unnamed peak in Alaska.
Stevens represented Alaska in the U.S. Senate from 1968 through 2008 and was the longest-serving Republican senator in U.S. history. He died Aug. 9 in a plane crash in Western Alaska.
