TOPEKA | The two major-party candidates for Kansas governor represent tried and true political traditions in the Sunflower State.
Democrat Tom Holland, a state senator from Baldwin City, wants to continue the legacy of Democrats Kathleen Sebelius and Mark Parkinson and other leaders who won by creating coalitions of moderate Republicans and Democrats. Holland has vowed to protect funding for schools, social services and other state programs.
Republican U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback represents the state’s conservative base, which calls for smaller government, fewer regulations, and a greater focus on social issues such as abortion.
But this year, everyone agrees that the economy is the biggest issue.
Brownback says he promises to revise the state’s tax code and eliminate burdensome regulations. He also wants to revamp the school-finance formula and curb state spending, though he has yet to offer many details. Brownback has, however, set specific goals to increase education benchmarks, reduce poverty, and increase private-sector jobs.
