Alaska may finish counting before this California district

Eddie Jiminez and Lewis Griswold - Fresno Bee

November 13, 2010 06:17 PM

Fresno Democrat Jim Costa's lead in the 20th Congressional District election shrank slightly in the latest updated vote count Friday.

Costa, who declared victory when he overtook Andy Vidak on Wednesday, has a 1,107-vote edge over his Republican challenger after Fresno County elections officials released new vote totals Friday afternoon. Costa led by 1,200 votes Wednesday.

The incumbent trailed Vidak on Election Day.

However, ballots counted since Nov. 2 had been running in Costa's favor because most came from areas — Fresno and Kern counties — where he did well.

That trend reversed a bit Friday.

Vidak's initial lead was built on a dominating performance in Kings County, where he won nearly 70 percent of the vote.

Kings, however, finished counting its ballots Monday.

About 3,400 additional Fresno County votes in the 20th District election were counted since Wednesday.

The elections office was closed Veterans Day.

Fresno County still has close to 15,000 uncounted absentee and provisional ballots, Clerk Victor Salazar said.

Kern County elections officials continue to count about 3,000 absentee ballots that have been challenged, as well as 7,102 provisional ballots.

The next Kern vote update is expected Monday.
