Gov.-elect Nikki Haley will travel to Washington D.C., joining other newly elected governors meeting with Republican congressional leaders today and President Barack Obama on Thursday.
The meetings will provide Haley an opportunity to speak with federal leaders about state issues, spokesman Rob Godfrey said. In a statement, House Republican Leader John Boehner, of Ohio, said the meeting would provide a chance to discuss ways to repeal the health care bill with at least 15 incoming Republican governors and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.
Haley “wants to pass along her desire to the president and the new Congress to stop passing unfunded mandates down on the states,” Godfrey said.
Haley said during the campaign that she would lead a group of governors in opposition to the health care law passed in March. Haley has advocated repealing the law, which prevents insurers from denying or cutting coverage due to illness, expands coverage to children up to age 26 and lifts lifetime benefit limits. The law also requires states to expand their Medicaid rolls, and eventually requires people to purchase insurance or face fines.
This is Haley’s second opportunity to meet with national leaders and other governors, following a Republican Governors Association meeting last month in San Diego.
