Score another one for the Gipper.
President Ronald Reagan has inspired what's being billed as the first-ever Rose Parade float with a presidential theme, and it's in honor of the former California governor's 100th birthday. Reagan was born Feb. 6, 1911.
The float in the 122nd Pasadena Tournament of Roses on Saturday helps kick off a year's worth of events celebrating Reagan's life.
This is no ordinary float. Sure, it's 55 feet long and 26 feet high, not to mention 18 feet wide.
But it features replicas of 11 black-and-white photos of moments in Reagan's life, and those photos have been constructed by hand out of onion seed, poppy seed and rice.
The float's eagle? Its feathers were "artistically created with ironed magnolia leaves, interwoven with mahogany and red leaves, and finely detailed" with pampas grass and other materials, says a press release from the Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration.
There's also a replica of the statue of Reagan now at the U.S. Capitol, made of flax seeds.
