Sen. John McCain to be parade grand marshal in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Dawn Bryant - The Myrtle Beach Sun News

February 01, 2011 01:24 PM

A well-known U.S. Senator, a popular beach music artist and Christian bands are among the celebrities that will participate in a series of events this May aiming to boost business in Myrtle Beach, officials announced this morning.

U.S. Sen. John McCain will be the grand marshal of the May 28 Memorial Day weekend parade, which organizers say will have a more military feel and more participants than last year’s event.

The Memorial Day weekend activities are among several events that Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce officials have planned for a month that used to be dominated by bikers until the city approved rules to tone down the rallies two years ago.

Mayor John Rhodes said the events will give families and couples a reason to come to the beach. Rhodes said he’s not looking back at the bikers and is focused on new events that will help build up May business.

“We are pretty excited about what is going to happen this May,” he said this morning during a news conference announcing the event lineups. “It is going to be a great month of activities.”

Myrtle Beach again will host a Beach Music Festival, Beach Blast Christian Music Festival and Military Appreciation Days events, though several of those events have expanded.
