Kansas lawmaker apologizes for comment about shooting illegal immigrants

Brad Cooper - The Kansas City Star

March 16, 2011 07:14 AM

TOPEKA — State Rep. Virgil Peck issued an apology today for comments that he made about shooting illegal immigrants.

Peck, a Republican from Tyro in southeast Kansas, handed out a statement on the House floor at about noon today.

“My statements were regrettable. Please accept my apology,” Peck said in a statement that he signed.

Peck made the comment Monday during a committee meeting grappling with how to deal with controlling the wild hog population.

Peck said, “if shooting these immigrating feral hogs works, maybe we have found a (solution) to our illegal immigration problem.”

Peck later said he was joking and told the Lawrence Journal-World after the hearing that his constituents are upset with illegal immigration.
