Texas Sen. Cornyn says Perry would be good presidential candidate

Anna M. Tinsley - The Fort Worth Star-Telegram

June 02, 2011 07:37 AM

FORT WORTH -- Even though Gov. Rick Perry has spent more than a year talking about what's wrong with the federal government, he would likely have better than average odds if he makes a run for the White House.

"I think he'd have a good story to tell ... about the Texas success story and the Texas model," U.S. Sen. John Cornyn said Wednesday. "I have no knowledge as to whether he intends to run. He's spent a fair amount of time talking about what is wrong with Washington and what's right in Texas. I don't know whether he really wants to go into the lion's den in Washington, D.C.

"But I think he'd be a contender."

Cornyn's comments came after he spoke to a sellout crowd of more than 200 at the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce's Leaders in Government Series at the Petroleum Club of Fort Worth.

During his speech, Cornyn noted that he is concerned about high unemployment, excessive government spending and the massive federal debt. But he said these are not insurmountable problems.

"These are not bigger than us," Cornyn said. "These are things we can fix. We shouldn't look at them as challenges but also opportunities."

Regarding opportunities, Perry may see a new one in his future.

Last year, after releasing his book, Fed Up! Our Fight to Save America From Washington, Perry repeatedly told the news media that he would not run for president. Then last week, he told Fox News that he's "tempted" to run, although it's something he doesn't really "want to do."
