Obama backs back pay for furloughed workers

Lesley Clark - McClatchy Interactive

The statement says the administration "appreciates that the Congress is acting promptly to move this bipartisan legislation and looks forward to the bill's swift passage."

The bill -- which has bipartisan support in Congress -- would retroactively pay federal employees furloughed as a result of the government shutdown that started Monday.

"Federal workers keep the nation safe and secure and provide vital services that support the economic security of American families," the administration said, adding that it "looks forward to the bill's swift passage.'

The administration noted that the bill, "alone, however, will not address the serious consequences of the funding lapse, nor will a piecemeal approach to appropriations bills." It calls for the House to take an up or down vote on the Senate measure to fund the government "and bring the nation's dedicated civil servants back to work."
